Here we are in 2010, with thoughts of Christmas pretty well behind us for another year. However, during the previous five years while living in Beirut, Lebanon, we grew accustomed to worshipping with the Armenian Evangelical congregation in our neighborhood on their Christmas Day, celebrated on January 6.

In the Americas, we frequently take the first Sunday in January as Epiphany Sunday to think about the coming of the Magi (last week) or Jesus’ baptism by John (this week). All this is to say that we are not yet through the season that commemorates Jesus’ birth and his calling to ministry. We have yet to consider Jesus’ ordination to ministry (Adult Bible Study, p. 30) or his baptism as final preparation for a messianic mission (Adult Bible Study Teacher, p. 28).

As the lesson title announces, Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan establishes Jesus’ identity. In Jesus Matters, the book to which we have been referring, several chapters provide valuable background for discussing this all-important matter of Jesus’ identity. Chapter 2 by John Driver and Daniel Driver asks, "Who is Jesus?" and responds by examining the name "Jesus" along with the titles, "Savior," "Messiah," "Son of God," and "Lord." This chapter can provide background for discussing verse 17 of today’s text: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Later on in the book, chapter 13, "Jesus and Mission," deals with the question of the essential character of Jesus’ earthly life. The writers make a specific reference to the role of baptism in launching his mission (p. 187). Finally, on page 195, we find a discussion connecting our spiritual forebears, 16th century Anabaptists, and their understanding of baptism with what Jesus’ own baptism stood for, namely unconditional commitment to living out God’s will.

I hope by now you have been able to find a copy of Jesus Matters and read the relevant, helpful portions we have been highlighting. May it strengthen your appreciation for Jesus’ uniqueness, as well as your enthusiasm for helping others to appreciate Jesus more.
