Wrestling with God: Devotional Readings for Men
Jacob is not exactly a model man of the Bible. He is a manipulator and
a deceiver, and he plays favorites among his children. Still, God meets
with him repeatedly and works out divine purposes in his life.
A key moment comes on the night before he meets his brother Esau, years after the two angrily separated. Jacob wrestles all night with a “man” whom he later describes as God. He emerges from the encounter both wounded and blessed, and with a new name: Israel.
Wrestling with God is for men who want to get in touch with God inside the struggles of their lives. It contains five articles on the spiritual life and 52 short devotionals based on the stories of biblical men, from Genesis to the letters of Paul. Written prayers and reflection questions make the book handy for personal and group use.

The Closer Than a Brother Study Series for Men
The series title for the men’s study series, Closer than a Brother, is taken from Proverbs, which speaks of the value of friendship, one of the key needs of men today.
By the time we reach middle age, most of us have established our identities, our families, and our spiritual bonds with other men. This series is designed to help you find spiritual companionship within a group of other Christian men.
Today’s Christian men long to be spiritually grounded and have a meaningful relationship with God, as well as to understand their roles in family, church, and society. This series of five booklets will help men’s groups enter together into reflection and growth and guide them to become communities of disciples. Each study, designed for ages 40-60, contains biblical reflections on the topic with an emphasis on personal sharing in the context of Christian community. Sessions include ideas for reflection, discussion, and response, with leader’s tips at the end of each booklet.
Each study contains five sessions.
How to Use the BookletTitles available in the series:
What Really Matters: Conversation Starters for Men
by J. Lorne Peachey and Everett J. Thomas
In What Really Matters you will work at deeper friendships even as you converse about four key issues in the life of men: friendship, power and wealth, sex, and family. Each session includes time for worship, reflection on a Bible passage, and discussion in pairs and in larger groups.
The Meaning of Tough: Using Power and Wealthby Leonard Beechy
Despite changes in gender roles, men must still grapple with how to manage the money they earn and the power they have in their homes, churches, and workplaces. Like sex, wealth and power can be abused, or they can be used in a God-honoring way.
Sex and Faith: Celebrating God’s Gifts
by David Boshart
Men think about sex a great deal. Some feel they are not getting enough, some get too much. Many have questions about appropriate and healthy habits of thought and action and don’t know how to talk about them constructively. This study will help Christian men learn how to honor God through their sexuality.
Closer than a Brother: Building Deeper Friendships
by Sven Eriksson
Many men desire deeper friendships, but don’t know how to begin. This study provides opportunity to reflect on friendship while encouraging group experiences that foster such friendships.
Relatively Speaking: Strengthening Family Ties
by Gordon Houser
Men relate to families as sons, brothers, fathers, and members of extended families. This study goes beyond the patriarchal and hierarchical models of family in discussing the vital roles of fathers and husbands, and also acknowledges the needs of single men.
